The story that had been played out in micro at the start is then explored on a macro level. Their story unexpectedly brings them into contact with Nigeria’s political elite, and from that point it stops being a novel about Chike and becomes a much wider-ranging novel about Lagosian politics and corruption in the government. He and the other characters face several big decisions where there is no obvious right course of action, some of which have consequences that they can’t foresee. Although he risks everything to desert the army, it’s largely a selfish decision – he feels that the cost to himself of continuing to kill would be greater than the costs of running – and he spends the rest of the book wondering what type of man he is going to be now. The novel follows Chike’s experiences wrestling with the question of what it takes, what it costs, to be a good man and have accountability for your actions. The novel opens with Chike, a military officer, deciding to desert when the killing of innocent civilians in an attempt to suppress northern militias becomes too much for him. Welcome to Lagos is largely concerned with corruption in Nigeria.
